The new R250m Ekurhuleni ICC fuels economic development
Johannesburg, South Africa, July 2016 - The City of Ekurhuleni has been blessed with a new R250 million international convention centre (ICC) that has come to raise the bar in South Africa’s tourism offering and to boost economic development. Attached to the newly refurbished four star Destiny Luxury Hotel, the Ekurhuleni ICC adds to the country’s tourism industry a state of the art facility with 2 800 seats for conferencing and banqueting. With a 915m² auditorium and 6 breakaway rooms, the ICC development is located about 20km east of Johannesburg in an exclusive private property in Bredell, Kempton Park.
The Destiny Exclusive Hotel boasts 40 guest rooms: 27 Luxury rooms, 12 Superior suites and 3 Presidential suites. The Exclusive Hotel, the extravagant restaurant, the Health and Wellness Spa and Gym, together with the Ekurhuleni ICC offers a comprehensive conferencing environment. As a 100% black owned, Level 1 BBBEE contributor, the development is attractive to a wide variety of clients while standing to advance transformation in the tourism sector. "The facilities close proximity to OR Tambo International Airport and the surrounding world class transport network has made it a “hit” with conference organisers who are looking for a cosy offering", says Ekurhuleni ICC chairman Zamani Ernest Letjane. “We would like to point out that Ekurhuleni ICC offers the best of both worlds in being located within a city setting but the suburban surrounding of the exclusive private property means that it is a bit tucked away when compared to facilities located at the centre of the concrete jungle.
Being a stone’s throw away from the OR Tambo International Airport, means that the facility is around magnificent road and rail network with the Gautrain as a cherry on top.” Letjane adds that the new ICC also stands to benefit from the journey of the Ekurhuleni Municipality as an Aerotropolis. This status means that Ekurhuleni is the next best thing within South Africa’s economic development trajectory with billions of Rands in investment budgeted for. Ekurhuleni ICC is well placed to benefit from the Aerotropolis development wave while on the other hand propelling the development itself.
The ICC comes with well-resourced facilities for conferencing and banqueting plus a health and wellness spa, a gym and a restaurant attached to the hotel. “The Health and Wellness Spa is an ideal venue to pamper guests with professional services ranging from a nail salon, facials, and massages to body scrubs. Our qualified spa therapists will make sure you leave the premises relaxed and stress free.”
The Ekurhuleni ICC is fully Wi-Fi enabled and connectivity is complimentary to its delegates and guests. It further owns a fleet of luxury vehicles for shuttle services and a luscious garden for various events and scenery. Letjane says the property, the hotel and the ICC, is scheduled for major further developments that will more than double its capacity. The hotel, currently set on an area of 3 572.82 m², is scheduled for expansion that will set it on a 28 622 m² site. “We are working on a plan to erect an additional new luxury 290 standard rooms and 10 presidential suites hotel with three restaurants to accommodate both the leisure and business users of this convention centre.
The New Destiny Hotel development is expected to make a large contribution to the objectives of government and the growth of the economy by providing job opportunities and increasing economic production, says Letjane.
